How to make Dr. Aviva’s Sleep Easy Tea

Often times one finds a recipe that is simply perfection, no edits or changes needed. This is the case with Dr Aviva Romm’s Sleep Easy Tea. While this tea is anything but complex, it is its pure simplicity that makes it a daily go to of mine.

This evening tea is prepared using 4 herbs that are appreciated for their calming and digestive properties, making it a perfect night cap for both adults and children. Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) may be the most well known plant for its nervine and anti-inflammatory properties. Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is another favorite for calming the nervous system, acting as a mild sedative for insomnia, as well as aiding digestion. Lavender’s (Lavandula officianlis) familiar aroma overtakes this infusion, while the flowers offer profound relaxing, anti-depressant effects. Peppermint (Mentha piperata) is renowned for its digestive properties and is the heavy lifter in this evening tea.

Together these herbs make a wonderful infusion to soothe the body, mind, and soul as we transition from our hectic days to tranquil and peaceful nights. I urge you to make a ritual of making this tea, from measuring out the individual herbs, to boiling the water, to observing the infusion take color while inhaling the scent. The making of this infusion is as important to your wind down ritual as drinking it.

The following recipe makes about 2 cups of infusion:

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tbsp Chamomile blossoms
  • 1 Tbsp Lemon balm leaf
  • 1 Tsp Lavender Flowers
  • 1 Tbsp Peppermint leaf

Directions:

  • Place the herbs in a tea pot or French Press and cover with 2 cups of boiling water
  • Cover the pot and let steep for 10 minutes
  • Strain and drink either plain or with 1/2 tsp honey per cup
